Class Experience

Who is this course for?
This course is specifically designed for teen athletes aged 13-18 who are looking to take their performance to the next level. Whether you are a competitive soccer player, a swimmer, a dancer, or a multi-sport athlete, this class provides the evidence-based science you need to fuel your dreams. It is also ideal for parents who want to ensure their teens are getting credible nutrition information rather than "influencer" advice.

What will be taught?
In this course, we teach teen athletes that food is more than just calories—it’s information for their cells and fuel for their muscles. Students will move beyond "junk food fuel" to master the "secret weapon" of elite athletes: evidence-based nutrition. They will learn how to manage their nutrition to prevent mid-game crashes, support long-term bone health, and improve overall athletic performance.

What topics will you cover?

  • The Energy Batteries (Glycogen & ATP): How the body stores fuel in the muscles and liver, and why a "morning slump" is usually just an empty battery.
  • The Truth Squad (Female Athlete Triad & Health): Why a "missed period" isn't a badge of honor and how metabolic compensation can affect growth and bone density.
  • Mastering the Clock (Nutrient Timing): The "2-4 Hour Window" for main meals and the "1-Hour Top-Up" for quick energy.
  • The Sweat Science (Hydration & Thermoregulation): Using the "Urine Color Test" and "Scale Test" to detect dehydration before performance drops.

How is your class structured?
The course is built into four high-impact lessons:

  • Lesson 1: Energy Pathways & The Female Athlete Triad – Understanding the ATP "currency," the Athletic Persona Assessment, and the science behind staying healthy while training hard.
  • Lesson 2: Nutrient Timing & The Blueprint – Mastering the Pre, During, and Post-workout windows. Assignment: Students use the Nutritionix database to build their own personalized meal plans for 200, 400, 600, and 800-calorie goals.
  • Lesson 3: The Hydration Station – A deep dive into electrolytes, sweat science, and temperature regulation to keep your body performing at its peak.
  • Lesson 4: Performance Science & Marketing Myths – Spotting supplement scams, busting "influencer" food myths, and finalizing the ultimate Game Day plate.

How will you teach?
My style is "Performance Coach" meets "Science Lab." I skip the dry textbook lectures and deliver high-energy, actionable science. We focus on making complex biological processes easy for teens to understand and apply immediately to their very next practice or game.

How much will learners interact with you?
Learners engage through a multi-sensory experience designed for maximum retention:

  • Dynamic Video Lessons: Including "Olympic-level" deep dives and technical breakdowns of glycogen storage.
  • Interactive Quizzes: Knowledge checks after every major concept (e.g., the Nutrients & Energy Pathways Quiz).
  • Digital Tools: Hands-on activities using professional tracking software (Nutritionix.com) to build real-world meal plans.
  • Worksheets & Assignments: Practical tasks like the Nutrient Timings Worksheet and the Athletic Persona Assessment to tailor the science to their specific sport.

Hi, I’m Erin Crowell!
I’m the Founder and CEO of Happy Kids Nutrition Academy, but first and foremost, I’m a parent who knows the "veggie struggle" is real. With a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Human Nutrition from Mount Saint Vincent University and over a decade of experience in the nutrition and fitness industry, I’ve dedicated my career to making health education fun and accessible for the next generation.

My mission is to empower kids aged 8-18 to build a positive relationship with food through science-backed, interactive learning. From kinesiology to food science, I believe that when kids understand the why behind their food choices, they develop habits that last a lifetime. I’ve been honored to be featured in Inc. Magazine, Global News, and Start UP Canada, and I’ve had the joy of teaching over 1,000 students across 20 countries. I can’t wait to help your child thrive!

My daughter has thoroughly enjoyed participating in this class and has learnt a lot. She has started to apply everything fro the lessons into daily life and talks about all she learnt about to everyone in the family. A very interesting class with excellent resources and a fantastic teacher. I would highly recommend the lesson and we cannot wait to join more.
